    The friar rose at midnight hour
    To toll the Abbey bell,
    And ring the joyful tidings down –
    Through valley, glen and dell,
    That Christ, the Prince of Peace, had come
    Upon this blissful day
    To cancel Adam’s primal sin
    And wipe all stain away.

    The waseen tapers flickered red
    Along the dusky aisle
    As slowly came the chanting Monks
    In solemn stately file,
    The carven pillars o’er the floor
    Hung shadows weird and lone –
    And shook with deep vibrations
    To the organ’s thunder-tone.
    III
    The Brother of the Abbey tower
    Still tolled the Abbey bell,
    That sent the joyful tidings down
    Through valley, glen and dell
    And many a pious Ave
    He slowly muttered there,
