    While censers swing and Seraphs sung
    And glory gleamed all round.

    The bell within the Abbey tower
    For hours had ceased to ring;
    The Monks within their oaken stalls
    For hours had ceased to sing
    They sought the Brother in the tower
    Before the dawning grey.
    They found him mute, and cold, and still,
    With life-breath fled away.

    Requiem aeternam
    Sang the Abbot from the throne,
    And all the Monks responded
    With deep and thrilling tone;
    Miserere, miserere
    Was chanted down the nave,
