    From out Duhallows western mountains
    To where the Lee in streamlet narrow,
    Forth issues from lone "Gougane Bara",
    Then eastward to Cork City stretches,
    Until Lough Mahon's shore it reaches
    How quiet she grazed, or slept secure
    That cow which long had served the poor,
    Or stood to ease and took a pleasure
    In filling up the poor man's measure,
    But whence she came no mortal knew,
    Or if up from a calf she grew
