    famous jump; but there is not the slightest doubt that Freeman; who was said to have been a marvellous physical specimen, accomplished something far beyond the ordinary. It is quite possible, nay probable, that he actually cleared 7 feet 8 inches, but aided to the extent of a foot or more by having a spring-board cleverly placed under the take-off. The Freemans were of bromwellian or Williamite yeoman stock, and it was of the fashion in those days for such people to amaze the peasantry by supposed extraordinary powers, physical and otherwise. In manly feats of a kind that admitted no deception they were a remarkable family. They were skilled hurlers, and on occasions, William and his six brothers selected from the neighbourhood fourteen other capable wielders of the ash, and then challenged and beat the pick of the "twenty-one' parishes".
