    As if he had stepped from the pages of "Knocknagow", a real life "Matt the Thresher" was William P. Murphy, the herculean village blacksmith whose hammer-throw over Liscarroll Castle has for generations been the wonder and envy of modern aspirants to fame in this particular event. Owing to the unusual nature of the fling, which is said to have been done with a missile of regulation weight, exact measurement is not possible, but experts in such matters swer that the distance is good enough to win an Olympic prize in our day; and the feat was all the more remarkable because the hammer had a rigid handle instead of the flexible one now used which gives a big advantage to the thrower.
