“About four miles to the south-east of Mallow there once lived a very bigoted old gentleman who owned a very large estate, which has now happily passed into the possession of a community of Nuns.”
About four miles to the south-east of Mallow there once lived a very bigoted old gentleman who owned a very large estate, which has now happily passed into the possession of a community of Nuns.
On this estate for hundreds of of years tillage farming was extensively carried on. From year to year each field went under the plough except one field which was called Páirc Na Marbh or the field of the dead. Now this field was very long and very narrow and at one end there was once a graveyard. Hence the named "Páirc Na Marbh".
The gentleman who owned the estate often wanted this field ploughed but the old steward who was a Catholic by some means or other always managed to save it from the plough on account fo the graveyard.
Anyone passing through the field at this time would not know that it was a cemetery as the fence had fallen and cattle and sheep roamed and fed through it.
