- Long ago when the priests and teachers were hunted, the teachers used to go around the country teaching some of the children in barns, or by the ditches, and those schools were called hedge-schools.There was a hedge-school in Ballindangan and Redmond Roche was the teacher. His pupils paid him according to their means. The children who could afford it gave him money, but the poorer children used to give him turf, or bacon or a cake or anything they could afford. They wrote on copy-books which they made themselves of paper. They also wrote on slates. They were taught reading, writing and arithmetic. The school was held in Redmond Roche's own house. The children stood in a circle around his table.Redmond Roche was also called the coiner Roche because he used to coin money. The ruins of his house are still to be seen in Ballindangan.
