- In olden times the people had various ways for discovering the time and knowing the weather.
Sometimes when they wanted to know the time to get up to go to the fairs and the markets, the kept a special cock in the house which crew at a certain time in the morning.
This cock was kept over the door with a few hens. They were very useful to those who had no other means of knowing the time as clocks were very scarce in olden times.
They also knew the time by the sun. Some people in olden days were very clever about the sun and they could tell the time by the sun at various times of the day.
When my Grandmother was young her parents used to give her charge of the house when they would be going out in the fields working. When she asked what time she would put on the dinner her father used to mark a certain spot in the kitchen where the sun was sure to shine.
