- There were no shops in this district long ago. People used go to the nearest town to make purchases. The local name for tick was score. When a person went into a shop for goods on score the account was kept in lines. The was a line about an inch long for a two shilling piece and one half as long for a shilling and so on. Boot was a word which was also connected with buying and selling. It was considered very unlucky to transact buisiness on Mondays. This custom is observed even at the present day. Markets were held in the villages long ago.Long ago the district was full of hucksters and pedlars. None of them come around now.Long ago the coins were known by the same names as they are known (k)now.
