- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)In the case of drills, a double board plough is used to make drills of about twentyseven inches wide. When ridges are preferred the ground is ploughed in five-sod ridges. The surface of the ridges is levelled, the potatoes are put in with a spade, the openings for the sets or cut potatoes is closed with a shovel. Sometimes bag manure is spread on the ridges and then the manure is covered with earth taken from the furrow. Wooden ploughs were used long ago but none of these are now to be seen. Spades are now made at Templemichael. (about 3 mls to the east of Carrignavar). The mill is on the Glashaboy river.
Medium sized sound well shaped potatoes are used for seed. These are carefully selected and put on a loft or barn floor to dry.
The potatoes are cut in sets (usually called sciollán) with a sharp knife. These sets are then stored in a barn and may be sown in a week or two.
