    were now half way across. Suddenly amid a fierce yelling a volley of musketry tore through the advancing soldiers.
    They were completely taken aback, they faltered, advance, volley after volley went their ranks. The water was deepening; all around the air was filled by hoarse cries. At last Royalist troops broke and fled, many were drowned in the deepening water, many crumpled up under the leaden hail. The next morning Lord Castlehaven and his men were in full retreat.

    The keep of the castle is all that now remains, and this is a magnificent example of the castle builder's art. There are five principal floors and many other small chambers. A curious point about the architecture is that the original door was 10 feet from the ground and was reached
