- Drake's Pool is so called after Admiral Drake. During the war between England and France, a French fleet pursued the English admiral into Cork Harbour. The English would have been overwhelmingly defeated were it not for Drakes cunningness. The admiral, instead of coming straight in and up the Lee river, turned west around Crosshaven corner up the Owenabuee river. The French being unfamiliar with the harbour, came right in and up the Lee river. While they scanned the river Drake came out of his hiding and went safely out of the harbour.
