  1. The old people often remarked that this district was not badly affected by the famine as it was not very densely populated. The people near the sea eaked out their living by salmon, herring, and sprat fishing.
    Traces of several houses at that time occupied can still be seen. Apparently the blight came from the sea, as a hot damp fog. At that time the food consisted of Swedish turnips and a plant of the "charlock" tribe known as "ráthach".
