Our great-grandmother did not go to town or city for bottle or box from the chemist-shop to cure their ills.
They roamed the fields and gathered the different herbs brought them home and when their decoctions were made stocked as they called it the "still-room. For instance wild-sage tea for lung trouble. "A poultice of flowering yarrow for rheumatism" "A poultice of sea weed for tender or swollen feet, a poultice of marsh mallow for boils or abscesses. Then for sore throats the would gather overnight about a dozen snails, pick their shells with a pin and put them on a plate. In the morning a pure thick colourless liquid would be on the plate. This would be mixed with honey and administered about a teaspoonful for a dose.(continues on next page)- Collector
