Sometimes straw-boys used to come and have a dance and they had great fun at the weddings. They used to take the bride away on horseback for about twenty miles across the country, and the bridegroom could do nothing but cry.
They got their wives back again safely. When she would return they would wave a white silk handkerchief with joy and the dancing would continue. As presents they would give small pieces of silver and the best of copper to the bride for good luck.
