- An Enchanter. In the year 1885, a man named Cottor used to travel the parish of Glin and Athea, looking for refuge and food. He had a horse named Geraldus. He rode the horse form house to house, and from town to town. If he would not like the reception himself and his horse would get, he had power to send a plague of rats.
Some people would not believe he had such power, and so when he came round, they would not let him in to their house at all. He sent a plague of rats, and when the people would go to bed, they would be tormented by the rats. They sent afterwards for the man and promised they would be kind to him, if he sent away the rats. They treated him well, and also his horse. Then he took away the rats, and gave them to someone else.
This man was not known around the vicinity by any person. He used to let his hair grown very long. His age was then about sixty five years. Where he went to when he left the parish of Glin, no one knew, but all believed he was an enchanter from some other country. My maternal grandfather who still lived in the of Athea about four miles from my school.(continues on next page)- Collector
