County Limerick is very rich in castles. The most famous are Shanid, Glenquin and Newcastle.There is one castle in my district and that is in Ballyvohen. It is a fine specimen of Norman art. It is said to have belonged to Normans called Johnson. An old Protestant lived there also.There was also the remains of a castle in Maine, and it was owned by the white knight, who was a descendant of the Geraldines.The ruins of a church are still to be seen in Ardagh graveyard. It is said to have been destroyed by Ireton. The cannon balls that ruined it, were found by the late Charles O'Shanaghnessy's father, and were about six inches in diameter. The church is said to have been built by Molua, who is the partron Saint of the district.The Newcastle West castle is situated in the centre of a historic(continues on next page)- Collector
