    She said it would remind him of a mother's parting scene,
    As he bid farewell that morning to the vales of New Direen.

    A token then she gave to him she said it to embrace,
    'Twas worn by St. Patrick the emblem of our race.
    It's leaves may pine they're always min
    I'll always think them green
    Twas plucked by you and wet by dew in the vales of New Direen.

    The morning train from Ardagh starts
    For Queenstown it would steam
    To bear the cute from his home
    In the vales of New Direen
    "God be with you Ireland you star like ocean queen
    And a fond farewell to all who dwell, in the vales of New Direen.
    (The above song was composed by Michael Downey a native of Newtown Sands. He died about 4 years ago aged 73 years. It was written in the occasion of a poor widow's son leaving for America. He was later drowned)
