- There is only one holy well in the parish of Newcastle West to my knowledge and it is called after Saint Brigid. People visit it everyday but there do be a big crowd on the second of February. All the people pay rounds at the well. They say the Rosery while they are going round the well and every round of the beads is called a round.It is said that long ago Saint Brigid was coming home from a visit from Saint Ita and it got dark just as she was at Shangarry.
