In the time of Saint Ita a chieftan lived near where Newcastle now stands. This Chief was always ready for an attack. He had his outposts as far as Templeglantine some five miles to the west of Newcastlewest. One day news reached him that an invading army of five thousand men had camped near Abbeyfeale and was about to attack him next day. He immediately went to Saint Ita and asked her for help. She told him she would ask God to help him. He went home and got his men ready. The next day the fight began. It lasted from sunrise to sunset.
