  1. In olden times turf was used by all in this for firing. There were three classes. The most common was hard turf. The peat was broken very fine and shoveled to the bank and mixed with water and removed to a dry place and shaped like sods. It was customary on those days to let the saving of it. It happened in this district that a labouring man who worked for a local gentlemant took the saving of a bank of turf. At night he
