When they arrived home the woman said "Thanks be to God" we'd be all right "now if we had a grain of salt".
Some public works were put on to give the people a chance to earn money to buy food. Some bridges were built here and there. The New Line running from Ballygran to Drewscourt was built at that time.
And when famine and fever were doing their terrible work crops of yellow corn were cut down and saved and sent out of the country.
