The time for digging the potatoes came but alas what the people dug were only skeletons of what should have been potatoes.
The famine commenced and continued and many people of this locality as well as every others emigrated to other countries but most of them died by the ditches and roadsides. The food of the people was turnips that were soft and frost-bitten.
At last the people cheered up for America, came to Ireland's aid, by promising to supply the people with food, if England lent her ships which at that time were known as the “timber walls of England” they were so numerous.
But Queen Victoria refused the ships so the people died. The houses of this district fell owing to dampness when not inhabited. The sites where these cabins were are still to be seen.
The year 1847, saw the worst of the famine over. The potato crop was revived by cutting the seed potatoes obtained from Holland and other industrial countries in small pieces like grain.(continues on next page)
