- About fifty years after the coming of the Normans, Robert Waspail owned the town of Rathkeale and granted the church to an abbey in Somerset. In 1280 Roger Waspail, his son granted to a John Maltravers (Mautravers "Mautravess" "Mautress") and it is from him, the castle got its name of Castle Matrix.
Mount Southwell was called after Lord Southwell. Mount Brown was called after the Browns who resided there.
Rath na Saor, means the fort of the tradesmen.
Raheen means a little fort.
Lisnamuck, means the fort of the pigs.
Liskillen, means the fort of the small church.
