    When I was a small bit of a garsoon, running about barefooted, my father, God be good to him, wasn't too well off. At any rate he had scraped together the price of a cow, gone to the fair of Rathkeale and bought one there. She was a springer and was showing every signs of being a good milker, when one day, to my poor father's grief she took the murrain.
    He tried every cure he could get or that was recommended to him by the neighbours, but 'twas all no good. On the third day she was stretched out for death and no hope for her. I remember the day well 'twas a heavy wet day since early morning and the cloud that was over the sky was nothing to the cloud that was over the house, and over my father at the prospect of losing the cow.
