- (continued from previous page)Bereft of home and kith, and kin,
With plenty all around,
I starved within my cabin,
And slept upon the ground,
But cruel as was my lot,
I never did hardship know,
Until I joined the English army,
Far away from Aherlow. For then long months in search of work,
I wandered far, and near,
I went into the poor house,
To see my mother dear
The news I find might break my heart,
But still in all the woe
I blessed the friends who made the grave,
In the Glen of Aherlow.I finish youth, dear countrymen,
Take heed of what I say,
If you join the English army,
You will surely rue the day,
And if ever you are tempted
Soldiering to go,
Remember poor (Patrick Sheheen) [?],
From the Glen of Aherlow.- Informant
