  1. (continued from previous page)
Farmers walk round the boundary fence of their farms shaking holy water and saying prayers.

    MAY-DAY:-
People will not go on journeys May Day, and they do not like to become ill on that day.

    ST. JOHN'S DAY:-
On that evening farmers light "clears." These are long poles with bundles of straw tied on top. These are lit, and the farmers run through the gardens and fields and cows, cheering wildly to drive away evil spirits. At cross-roads huge bon-fires were lit, and young people danced and sang round them until far into the morning.

    MICHAELMAS:-
The first goose of the season is cooked.

    ST. MARTIN'S DAY:-
A fowl is killed, so as to spill blood in honour of St. Martin.

    HALLOWE'EN:-
Called "Snap-Apple Night." The usual customs are observed.

    NEW YEAR'S DAY:-
"Cry New Year's Day and you'll cry for the year."

"Candlemas Day, throw candles and candlesticks all away."
