- In Spring we set about a half acre of potatoes on our farm every year. My father puts out manure with a horse and cart in the tillage field and then spreads it and breaks it with a four prong pike. Then he ploughs it with two horses and a plough. Long ago they used to plough it with timber ploughs or else dig with spades.
When the land is turned up, the ridges are hacked with a grub.
Then the seed potatoes are cut into skilláns, if the potatoes are cut before the ridges are prepared lime is put through them to prevent them from rotting.
In May they are trenched twice to save them from the frost.(continues on next page)- Collector
