    was a pupil of Brodericks.
Every evening Tom used to vie with the Master in jumping over a low ditch (fence) that was beside the house.
One evening Old Stirabout had placed a little handful of leaves over a cow-dung in the field and when Tom and the Master came along to jump he told them that whoever jumped as far as the leaves would win.
Young Tom of course wanted to jump first but Old Stirabout said "Stand back there and let the Master jump first."
The Master jumped on the hidden trap and got all smeared and that ended the jumping competitions.
The people used to enjoy the joke and often they threw it at the Master afterwards but it used not go down so well at all with him.
