- (continued from previous page)counter notices were posted all over the country calling the people to assemble in their thousands to see Fr. Hickey's cow sold. Coote sought the protection of the government, & on the day of the sale four companies of Highlanders, headed by their band & followed by a troop of lancers & srtillery, with two guns, marched into the village.
Many thousands had assembled. The cow was put up for sale. A belief then prevalent among the people was that at an auction there could be no sale unless there were at least three bidders. Under this mistaken idea, a friend of Fr, Hickey's, Mr. Moore, bid a sum for the cow much beyond her value, & she was knocked down to him. He was obliged to hand the money to the auctioneer, & the tithe was paid.
During all this time there was a good deal of hooting at the soldiers, with "groans for Coote" when the main body of the troops had left the village stones were thrown at four of the lancers who had remained as a rear guard. They fired their pistols at the assailants, of whom some were wounded. The rest of the lancers, galloped back, & the crowd dispersed.
Mr. Moore, of course, restored the cow to Fr. Hickey without delay. Her horns were decorated(continues on next page)
