  1. The Hedge Schools
    During the Penal Laws when catholics were forbidden to educate their children hedge-schools sprang up throughout the country.
    Two of these schools were in this district, one at Skehanagh and the other at Kilpeacon cross.
    The ruins of the one at Skehanagh are still to be seen - opposite Mr Madden’s house.
    The teacher at Skehanagh was Mr Standy Bourke and his method for teaching “The Rule of Three” was “State it as it lies”.
    The teacher at Kilpeacon was Mr Hosford.
