  1. (continued from previous page)
load feeling quite delighted with himself. Then suddenly a fierce greyhound jumped over the wall, and landed on the horses back. The poor frightened animal shied, reared and plunged to the other side of the rough road. Lauveen made frantic efforts to beat off the hound, but losing his balance he was thrown to the ground, while the prancing animal drew the heavy cart wheels over his body. He was almost dead by the time Billy got back to his side. There he lay on the roadside with black oats covering his mangled body and the empty butt in smidereens. Billy rushed after the poor animal with the greyhound at his heels, thoroughly enjoying the chase and having tied him to a popular tree, raced for a priest. He brought one back but Lauveen was beyond all aid.
His body was brought home that night in a neighbour's cart and the neighbours in whispers at the wake that night when Billy told them the tale said "Covetousness brings nothing home."
