    tortures and misery of a famine such as was the lot of their forefathers to endure.
    During and after the famine the greater part of the land especially the big farms changed hands. The owners were evicted and no locals could be got to take their lands. These then fell into the possession of imported bailiffs and grabbers, brought from distant parts. And it is their descendants who now possess the big farms of our parish. But the origin of these people is not forgotten. They lack the respect which goes to the poor descendants still living in hovels, of those people who kept their name and their honour and their loyalty to their neighbours, in those evil days of famine and evictions.
