- Lucky and Unlucky DaysSt Bridget's Eve is a lucky day for curing sore eyes by tying a red ribbon to the door latch. An animal suffering from any disease may be cured on St. Martin's Day by spilling a little of the animal's blood and by promising not to sell him. It is lucky to sow potatoes on Good Friday, and to plant trees within the Octave of All Saints' Day.
It is unlucky to begin to plough, to begin to build a house or to begin manual work which takes longer than a day to complete or to leave a house on Saturday, because work begun on a Saturday can never be ended. It is unlucky to begin anything of long duration on the 13th of the month. It is also unlucky to work machinery on St. Martin's Day, as he was killed in his mill.
