  1. Usually in the month of March or beginning of April the potatoes are sown around Roscrea. The farmer ploughs the ground in the month of January or February. If he has time he often ploughs the ground a second time. The gardens in the town are dug with spades and the potatoes are sown in ridges.
    Potatoes are sown in drills in the fields and big farms. A special kind of plough with two boards is used to open the drills. The farmer then draws out manure from the farmyard. He also buys some manure from a
