    downstairs. There was also a rather imposing Protestant Boarding and day school on the site where the Church of the Sacred Heart now stands. This was closed and taken down some time in 1861 or 1862 and the site was given by the then Sir John Carden to Dr. O'Connor for a new Catholic Church site. The same Sir John contributed £1,700 to the new Church Fund.
    Somewhere in 1857 or '58 Summer time, I presume, a race-meeting was held at Aughall which became historic as the site of "the Battle of Aughall". Amongst those who attended were a big crowd of soldiers from the Regiment then stationed in the Templemore Barracks. Some of the military and a section of
