    were not able to pay them they were sent out of their houses and left to starve. The potato crop was the chief food of the people and when this failed the people were left in a state of misery. Usually after war comes sickness and after the Great Famine there came a plague all over the country that swept out many districts. This was called the "flu." 1847 was called black 47.
