The small boys and girls wrote on slates but the bigger ones wrote on paper with pens and inks. These pens were made by the teacher for the children from old quils. There was no black board and the teacher wrote a headline on paper and the children copied it. The scholars sat on stones and stools. In the nightime other teachers went to houses where there would be three or four children. They stayed in the farmers houses where they taught for a few nights then they went to another house.
