- Once upon a time there lived a landlord and his agent in a house. This house was said to be haunted. One night they heard a knock at the door and when they opened it a beggar man walked in. They welcomed him and gave him his supper. The landlord asked him to stay in the house for the night, and said to him "Are you aware that this house is haunted, and I hope you are not afraid of ghosts". "I do not believe in ghosts at all" he said. "Well" said the landlord "will you stay in this house for the night and if you have any good news in the morning as to what you saw or heard during the night. I will give you £600 and this place to keep.
