- Long ago people had a very hard life for they had no machines to till the land. They had to dig the land for the wheat and potatoes with a spade, and when the crops were ripe they had to cut them with a bit of a hook, but later on machines and horses were used and ploughs served to till the land. The farmers have no trouble now in preparing for the crops because they have the necessary implements.
