- (continued from previous page)There was a pious man sentenced to death in Clonmel jail and the night before his execution happened to be the Eve of St. Fanahan. All that day he refused to eat because it was the feast of St. Fanahan. After 12:00 o'clock that night a knock came to his cell door and he heard a voice call “leave your cell”. the prisoner replied “I am chained by the foot to a heavy stone and cannot move” the voice said, “come on your way is clear”. A voice said for the 3rd time “leave your cell” and a face appeared – The face of St. Fanahan. The man at once left his cell though it was barred and locked and left the prison unseen The weight of the stone that was attached to the man would not weigh less than half a ton yet it rolled along as light as a cork. The man returned to his native town. On the morning of the celebrations he was relieved of his stone, and it is there to the present day at the well of St. Fanahan. The man went to America and was never heard of again.
