Many stories are told of the underground passage
leading from Athassel Abbey in which the monks
used to take refuge when oppressed.
After the time of Henry VIII the monks were order-
ed to disperse.
When the soldiers came to Athassel to get any in-
formation the could about the monks from the people
in the neighbourhood, the people had been told to
tell them nothing.
An old maid who supplied the monks with milk
told the soldiers all she knew about them. The
soldiers said she would get a reward of ten pounds.
Her plan was - to spill milk along the path which led
to the door of the cave. She did so.
One of the monks chanced to see her, he told his com-
rades who with him fled to Cashel.
The soldiers came and followed the path which
the milk had been spilt on, when they reached the
cave door they smashed it in.
To their surprise all they saw inside was the four
stone walls, although the most beautiful Altars and
carvings were there those cruel men saw nothing.- Faisnéiseoir
