in the field. But when he was gone Pat got tired of his job and seeing a wagon go the road he and the driver put the pigs into. Then he told the driver to sell them to the town butcher and bring him home their tails and the price of them. When he got the tails he stuck them down in the swamp. When he saw the farmer coming he ran out, shouting, "Come on, sir, all your pigs gone down barring their tails." Then he started to pull up the tails. The farmer thinkin the pigs were under began to scold Pat worse than ever. "Are you grumbling" says Pat, and the farmer went away. That night he and the old woman made up a plan. She was to go up a tree and shout "Cuckoo" and then they should pay Pat and let him off, as he was to stay until the cuckoo would call. The next day Pat and the farmer went out shooting birds. As they were coming back the old woman shouted "Cuckoo". "Come on home now 'till I pay you". "Wait" says Pat "untill I have a shot at the cuckoo". "Oh you have my mother killed" said the farmer. "Are you grumbling" said Pat. "Indeed I am" says he. Pat went to cut off his ear but he got £100 instead and went off home a rich and happy man.
