    For some centuries the Whitstone family lived in Clondegad House...

    a horse shoe nailed in front of her box.
    The Captain was a remarkably handsome man and he on "Bittter Sweet" made a charming snap shot.
    During the Boer War he volunteered for service in the South African Yeomanry leaving "Bitter Sweet" to mourn his absence.
    A local scribe, Martin King of Cappanagera, now living at Lisdeen, near Kilkee composed the following piece of poetry in connection with this event.

    Adieu! Bitter Sweet at honour's bright call,
    Light hearted I join in the Yeomanry Corps,
    In a month I'll be standing in sunny Transvaal,
    To shoulder my rifle and fight the brave Boers.
