The land here is very fertile and suitable for tillage, meadowing, and grazing. Woods are not numerous here but there are groves round Newhall, Ballybeg and Dromoland.The river Fergus a tributary of the Shannon is navigable as far as Clare Castle. It is noted for Salmon and Flat Fish. There are two lakes in the District namely Newhall and Ballybeg.
