To earn our money for Saint Stephen's day,
The man of the house is a decent man,
He won't refuse us if he can,
If he hasn't a penny a halfpenny will do,
If he has'nt that same may God bless you."
On Saint Brigid's Day the country people make little wooden crosses and fix them to the roof over the door. The crosses may still be seen in the farmer's houses throughout the country. Sometimes up to twenty crosses are seen.
Another custom among the girls and boys of this district is to chalk those marriageable people who did not get married during Shrove. This custom is practised on a Sunday and that day is called "Chalk Sunday"
On Saint John's day, on the 24th June boys go round in crowds collecting money for the bon-fire. On that night they light big fires and sit around them eating and drinking.
