Chapel lane was built in the year 1775. There was a chapel there that time, and that is why it is called Chapel lane. Later, they built the cathedral Chapel and the chapel in Chapel lane was knocked.
The Turnpike got its name because long ago travellers were charged a penny to pass along the road. Abbey Street was so-called because the Franciscan Abbey was there.
There was a great deal of corn and oats grown in Ennis at that time and it was from them the whiskey was made. There was a man travelling through Ireland and he said there were no finer orchards in Ireland than the orchards to be found about Ennis.
