famous horse fair.Spancillhill is four miles from Ennis on the Tulla road.Crowds of Tinkers and "horse blockers"collect for it from every part of Ireland and crowds of Ennis people go out the evening before .They used light fires and dance there and remain untill very late.Spancilhill fair is not as it was but still the practice of going out there from town the evening before has not died put.
On the 15th August the people never do any work as it is supposed to be a very unlucky day to work.During bad seasons farmers are allowed to work at the hay on Sundays and holidays of obligation.Michaelmas is the 29th of September and country people usually have the first goose of the year for dinner on that day.They call it "green goose".
St. Martin's Day falls on November 11th.On the eve of the feast people kill a cock and sprinkle the blood in a piece of flannel and it is supposed to cure pains.Some people never work machinery on St Martin's Day because he was killed in a mill.
