There was an old school at Howard's bridge in a field named Deirín. It was a school built with stones and it was roofed with thatch and scraws. A tailor named Hehir which the house and land belonged to was living in it before school was taught in it. A man named Paddy Liddy was teaching in it and he used go around to the scholars' houses in the night and spend one night with each one of them teaching them to read and write. He used to teach English and he used also teach how to write. He used never teach Irish and if anyone of his scholars spoke Irish he would get slapped. They had pens, ink, paper and books and the most of them had slates and and slate pencils. They used sit on forms and the master used write in slate and paper.
