- Scattery Island is situated in the river Shannon to the west of the town of Kilrush. In this island there was a huge serpent which caused a lot of disturbance and trouble. St Senan banished him out of it and chained him in Doolough lake, and commanded him to live on a trout and a half a day.Written by:
